Passport to a Proper Picnic

Picnic at Six Sigma Ranch“I’ve got a motor-car and a basket of strawberries and a bottle of Chateau Peyraguey – which isn’t a wine you’ve ever tasted, so don’t pretend. It’s heaven with strawberries.”

So penned Evelyn Waugh as a tribute to a casual English picnic in 1945.

But England, the birthplace of picnics since before anyone can remember, also has mastered the art of a formal outdoor affair. In contrast to wine and strawberries, Jane Austin describes lunch in the English countryside complete with servants hauling heading hampers across valleys and hills.

In either case, the point is not food as much as setting, to be out in the countryside, shaded by trees with family and friends.

At Six Sigma Ranch, we aim to take the work out of picnicking. Once you gather the family and friends, we have wine chilled for you at the tasting room, along with a selection of cheeses from fine dairies within 100 miles of the property. Add salami from our selection, hearty crackers and honey from the ranch, and you’re in for a feast that Jane Austin and Evelyn Waugh would both be happy to write about.

Is there a tour or tour/picnic that allows the lake county rock hounding?

Monica, yes, there are different ways to access Lake County diamonds at the ranch. First, we offer hiking at Six Sigma Ranch from 9am to 4pm daily. Details on the “Visit” page (and please check in and sign our liability release for at the Tasting Room). One of the hike routes starts at the tasting room and goes 2 miles to our “Diamond Mine Vineyard” where you can find the diamonds scattered on the ground. (you can read about it on the website, and also get the hiking guide at the tasting room). Also, we welcome guests to book our Saturday Vineyard Tours to the same location; the focus is wine, but it is possible to pick diamonds at the top of the vineyard on the tour also. – Christian
